This is a tribute to science fiction great Anne McCaffrey’s life, legacy, and work from the writers who knew her best. Science fiction Grand Master Anne McCaffrey and her work, particularly her Dragonriders of Pern series, are beloved by generations of readers. She was one of the first science fiction writers to appear on the New York Times bestseller list, the first woman to win the Hugo and Nebula Awards, and an inductee to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. Her death in November 2011 was met with an outpouring of grief and memories from those whose lives her stories had touched. Edited by her son Todd, Dragonwriter collects McCaffrey’s friends, fans, and professional admirers to remember and pay tribute to the pioneering science fiction author, from the way her love of music and horses influenced her work to her redefinition of the SF genre. Contributors include: Elizabeth Moon; David Brin; Chelsea Quinn Yarbro; Georgeanne; Kennedy (McCaffrey’s daughter); John Goodwin; Sharon Lee and Steve Miller; David Gerrold; Elizabeth Ann Scarborough (McCaffrey co-writer); Jody Lynn Nye (McCaffrey co-writer); Richard Woods; Charlotte Moore; and, Angelina Adams. The cover illustration is done by Michael Whelan, fifteen-time Hugo Award winner, twelve-time science fiction and fantasy art Chelsey Award winner, and the frist living artist inducted to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. His work featured on the cover and interior of Stephen King’s first and final Dark Tower books, on the Magic: The Gathering cards, and – most important for this project – most of the Del Rey editions of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series (with which he is heavily associated), among his many, many projects in the SFF genre. Whelan will also supply, for the interior, 8 to 10 color concept illustrations from his early work on Pern covers, along with commentary.
