In the mid 1980s under the editorship of Nigel Robinson the target range of Doctor Who novels went through a transformation. The size of the novels was increased from 128 pages, and older stories began to emerge in the range, rather than just the novelisations of stories that had recently appeared on television. The Seeds of Death, first broadcast in 1969, had already been released on video shortly before the book was published, meaning that readers could compare and contrast the two. Terence Dicks novel is very faithful to the tv serial. However he does add background to the characters, such as the fact that Osgood lives in a village miles away from the T Mat control centre.
